  About Our Beliefs

We are Christians first and Baptists second.

“Baptists hold, in common with all Christians, the fundamental beliefs of the Christian faith.” (Morris West, Baptist Principles)

On ecumenical occasions, we often say the Nicene Creed as an expression of the faith we hold in common with the universal Church.

A more distinctively Baptist expression of faith is found in The Centenary Message of the 2005 Baptist World Congress. This
has been adopted by The European Baptist Federation as, “
a Statement of Baptist Identity which can helpfully summarise the core beliefs and values which are common among European and Middle Eastern Baptists.”

On 26th April 2009, our church meeting adopted the following
short statement of the core beliefs of Llanishen Baptist Church.

Llanishen Baptist Church
Statement of Faith

We believe:

1.  In One God in three Persons: Father, Son
     and Holy Spirit.

     (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; John 14:16-17)

2.  God made the universe and rules over it.

     (Genesis 1:1; Nehemiah 9:6; Jeremiah 32:17)

3.  We can trust the Bible because it is God’s Word.

     (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Psalm 119:105; 2 Thessalonians 2:15)

4.  Sin is our failure to love God, love others
     and care for God’s world.

     (Luke 10:27; Genesis 2:15; Romans 3:23)

  5.  Jesus was born of the virgin Mary, lived without sin,
and is truly God and man.

      (Matthew 1:18; Hebrews 4:15; John 1:14; John 20:28)

6.  Jesus died on the cross to pay the price of sin
in our place and defeat evil.

     (1 Corinthians 15:3; Isaiah 53:5-6; 1 Peter 1:18-19)

7.   Jesus rose again bodily, and lives as Lord of all.

     (1 Corinthians 15:3-4; John 20:26-27; Philippians 2:9-11)

8.   God forgives our sins by his grace through faith
      in Jesus Christ alone.

      (Romans 3:23-24; Ephesians 1:7-8; Acts 4:12)

9.   The Holy Spirit leads us to Jesus Christ and helps us
              live and grow in him.

      (John 15:26; 1 Corinthians 12:13; 2 Corinthians 3:18; Acts 1:8)

10.  The Church exists to worship God, and to
       help people follow Jesus.

      (Ephesians 1:22-23; Hebrews 13:15; Matthew 28:19-20)

11.  The local church has the freedom to be guided by Christ
as believers meet in his name.

      (Colossians 1:18; 1 Corinthians 12:12; Acts 15:22; Matthew 18:20)

12.  Jesus commands believers to be baptised
as a sign of belonging to him.

       (Galatians 3:26-27; Colossians 3:11-12; Acts 18:8; Matthew 28:19)

13.  Jesus commands believers to share bread and
wine to remember what he has done for us.

       (Matthew 26:26-28; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26)

14.  Jesus will come again in glory to judge the earth,
and bring eternal life to those who trust in him.

       (Hebrews 9:28; Acts 1:11; Acts 17:31; 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)
